BSF

Can BSFL be used as edibles for humans?

There is interest in Black Soldier Fly Larvae for human food from specific groups. At present, Black Soldier Fly products have not been approved for use in human foods.

I would like to start a small BSFL colony. How would you recommend I start?

There are a number of BSFL hobbyists and a wealth of information online.  Our focus is on commercial production.

I’m interested in [another type of insect]; where can I get this information?

EnviroFlight exclusively utilizes the Black Soldier Fly. We recommend you check with your local university; they may offer helpful extension programs.

What food source(s) do you feed the BSFL?

Like humans, Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) require balanced diets.  We feed our BSFL a variety of locally sourced materials including spent grains from the distillery industry as well as bakery byproduct and other organic materials available from pre-consumer processing.  All materials fed to our BSFL are safe for use in animal feeds and meet AAFCO guidelines.

What is the regulatory status on insects in the food chain?

Our goal is to gain acceptance as an ingredient in the animal food industry. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) works with The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) to ensure all animal ingredients meet nutritious and safety standards before use. We continue to conduct R&D trials to gain AAFCO definition for a variety of species.

Why don’t you feed your BSFL animal waste/manure or post-consumer waste?

We follow the American Association of Feed Control Official (AAFCO) Guidelines. We also believe the manure waste of livestock is not a healthy diet for our larvae; the potential of heavy metal contamination, salmonella, and other unknown pathogens is not worth the risk.
